Giving a songwriting workshop

Hey, if you’re going to Conflikt, in Seattle, in a few weeks? I’ll be hosting a songwriting workshop. Details are in their latest progress report; it’ll be based on the one I did for VCON, last October.

It went over well in Vancouver – well, okay, technically, Richmond – so hopefully it’ll go well here, too. See the link for details, but sign up early, and if you have something in advance to workshop a bit, get that to me early.

Hope to see you there!

staring at the floor

One thing that happens in eye surgery is something called “positioning,” where there is literally a bubble in your eyeball that you keep in a correct spot by controlled angling of your head.

Which is why I’ve been staring at the ground since Friday, and why I’ve been movement-restricted since the first, unsuccessful go at this.

I knew this would be boring. I did not realise how painful it becomes over time. I have vicodin to take the edge off, but fuck, this hurts. Crying-from-the-whole-body-pain hurts, without the vicodin. Not so bad, with.

The good news is that tomorrow should be the last day, for the most part. There’s still phase-out and no lying on my back for another week and I won’t have full vision for a few more weeks, but…

yeah. Painful. Hell, Anna is in way less pain than I’ve been, and she had an organ out! At least so far. She’s still surfing the percoset wave at the moment.

I’ve ordered that ribbon microphone kit I’ve been wanting, as a bit of retail and DIY therapy. With some luck, next post can go back to talking about things like that instead.

But, of course, I’m mostly terrified of having to go back in for round three. Right now I don’t know how I’d do it.

OH: if you got any geekgirlcon pics of the show, send them in? Several people took photos and I handed out cards, but so far, no joy. I found one hall shot (sadly, angled and blurry, and really late, I look as exhausted as I was) on the Flickr stream, but that’s all. Thanks!

back at geekgirlcon

So, you missed the show at GeekGirlCon? Here’s a copy of the script for the mini-opera you missed. It’ll change each time we do it, of course. This time, Captain America won. Next time? Who can say…?

SONG LIST:
Something’s Coming (The Warning Cry)
Starship on Fire (The Turning Point)
World Trapped in Amber (The Contemplation)
Sick of America (The Supervillain’s Rant)
Anarchy Now! (The Fight Song)

STAGE: Solarbird’s Flag (held by HENCH NICOLE) and Cascadia Flag (held by HENCH ANNA), flanking and behind SOLARBIRD.

SOLARBIRD performs Something’s Coming.

SOLARBIRD: “We used to be superheroes, you know…” [usual mythos explanation here]

[SOLARBIRD performs Starship on Fire and World Trapped in Amber.]

CAPTAIN AMERICA stands in the shadows, opposite stage area.

SOLARBIRD [derisively]: “Captain? Captain Hammer? In the shadows? Is that you?”

[Solarbird whips up the BROKEN HAMMER PROP and smirks.]

SOLARBIRD [mocking]: “Ready for a rematch already? Last time didn’t go so well.”

[CAPTAIN AMERICA steps heroically into full view, possibly catapulting a railing to do so. SOLARBIRD was not expecting somebody from the big leagues, and is visibly taken aback.]

SOLABRIRD: “Uh. You.”

CAPTAIN AMERICA: “Step away from the flags, Solarbird. We don’t need to do this.”

SOLARBIRD: “Oh, I think we do, Captain. I think we really do. Because, well… you know why…”

[SOLARBIRD performs SICK OF AMERICA. This is the Supervillain Rant. Lots of physical action and mobility.]

CAPTAIN AMERICA: “You have valid grievances, Solarbird. But you are tearing America apart to express them, and I cannot let you do that. We can stand here until tomorrow morning–and I will still disagree with you.”

SOLARBIRD [Laughs angrily]: “I?! I… have done nothing. Nothing except recognise what has already true. I tried it your way, Captain – I tried it your way for a long time. All I got was a torture regime, a surveillance state… a registration act… and a Traitor declaration. And I, for one, will gladly have four or five separate Republics before one united empire.”

[HENCHES lean FLAGS against WALL.]

SOLARBIRD: “There’s a difference between an optimist and a fool, Captain. I wonder, which are you?”

[HENCHES step forward, in front of SOLARBIRD. SOLARBIRD smiles at her henches.]

SOLARBIRD: “I think it’s time for a lesson in applied politics. Get ‘er, gang.”

[HENCHES gang-rush CAPTAIN AMERICA, who shoves them all back at once with her shield, and HENCHES fly all akimber.]

CAPTAIN AMERICA: “Mother and country!”

[SOLARBIRD performs ANARCHY NOW. Fight scene proceeds as rehearsed. HENCHES… don’t do so well.]

CAPTAIN AMERICA: “Honestly, those are your best henchies? Who’d you get them from, The Monarch?”

SOLARBIRD: “…maaaaaybe. It was short notice.”

CAPTAIN AMERICA: “Well, show’s over. Come peacefully for shawarma, or it’s your turn!”

SOLARBIRD: “Shawarma, or shawarma and… jail?

CAPTAIN AMERICA: “No promises.”

SOLARBIRD: “Toni’s outside, isn’t she?”

[CAPTAIN AMERICA half-smiles.]

SOLARBIRD: “Aaaaaand Coulson. Damn.”

SOLARBIRD puts down her zouk, sighing: “I’ll be good.”

[SOLARBIRD puts forward her wrists, as if for handcuffs. CAPTAIN AMERICA marchers her by the arm towards offstage. While being turned away, SOLARBIRD looks back to any audience, holds up her other arm, fingers obviously crossed, and winks. CAPTAIN AMERICA pretends not to notice. Then SOLARBIRD breaks away from CAPTAIN AMERICA.]

SOLARBIRD: “Baiiii-iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!”

CAPTAIN AMERICA: “Avengers Assemble!”

SOLARBIRD: “Henches! TO ME!”

[CAPTAIN AMERICA and SOLARBIRD run back to stage and bow. SOLARBIRD introduces HENCHIE AMBER, HENCHIE ANNA, and HENCHIE NICOLE, WHO HAS A SHOW. NICOLE plugs her show. SOLARBIRD then introduces CAPTAIN AMERICA, who takes a bow. CAPTAIN AMERICA introduces SOLARBIRD, and out.]

a brief post-geekgirlcon note

First, thanks to Captain America, Minion Amber, Minion Anna, and Minion Nicole for working the show on Saturday at GeekGirlCon; I think, on the whole, it worked as a dramatic piece, but it’s hard to tell from stage. If you were there, I hope you’ll give some feedback, as it was the first time we’d tried that!

Thanks to GeekGirlCon for letting us do our little production, as well. ^_^ I spent most of Saturday on the show, and then wandering about a bit; Sunday I spent almost entirely in the gaming pit. GGC’s gaming pit needs a Looking For Group signup, but is really nice. I also bought a game.

Kyoshi and Water Tribe

Secondly, I’m probably going to be radio-quiet for a while, as I have to go in for emergency eye surgery tomorrow. This is unrelated to anything at the convention; I’ll write up a longer post about that, next.

microantigravitron emitter

And to think they told me a micro-anti-gravitron emitter simply couldn’t be made. Have to do something about the power chain colour, tho’. Should be nice and green.

Who has the hammer now, Captain?

GeekGirlCon! 2pm! Tomorrow! Time is a bit approximate because it’s a ninja gig, but we will be there an there will be adventures.

good rehearsal last night

We had a good full-cast rehearsal last night. The Henches performed well. We tweaked the script a bit more, in details, adding some fun. Five-person cast! Props! Captain America’s shield is super-shiny. The sashes I made for the Hench crew look good.

If you missed them before:

This is going to be fun. Saturday, 2pm. Watch the twitter feed for location. 😀

henches get sashes

Henches get sashes! As is required by Guild law, of course. Well, uniforms. Sashes count.

These are of course for the GeekGirlCon ninja show, 2pm(ish) Saturday, GeekGirlCon. Not sure where they’re putting us yet, but look for it – it’ll be a show. 😀

work in progress

I’m a sucker for shiny fabrics, so a new costume is in the works for the 2pm-ish Saturday ninja show at GeekGirlCon.

henchies needed urgently

So this weekend at GeekGirlCon I’m doing a 5-song mini-concert, as a ninja show, at the con. And I really, really need a couple of people who want to play Henchies, get into a fight with a superhero, and lose. It’s part of the show.

I have one, but I need at least two more. It is acting, but there’s no lines to learn, and it’s comedic – you don’t actually have to know how to fight. You’re supposed to lose, after all. XD

While we have permission to do this, this isn’t an official event, so I can’t get you passes or anything. I bought my own membership a while ago.

Please, please, please contact me if you want to play this part. We’re going to rehearse once, this week, and then just show up and do it.

are you going to geekgirlcon?

If you are, and you would be willing to take on a short and fairly simple acting role (as a henchie) as part of an unofficial/ninja concert, contact me as soon as you see this!
