Is this just some sort of weirdness on my browser, or is Google actually saying this?

Because I’m pretty sure everyone with a Pacific Ocean coast might have something to say about that. Particularly but by no means exclusively China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and Viet Nam.

I *think* that link is because Google’s “Cultural Institute” thing opened this year (i.e., the 70th anniversary calendar-year-wise), and they’re linking to it today because of V-E day. Not suggesting today itself is the anniversary of the total end of the war.
It’s clumsy, but the actual Cultural Institute itself that the link goes to does show September as the end date, and covers Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and so on. So I think this was probably more just “textual clumsiness” than anything else.
