I keep hearing modern anime sucks, that there’s a crisis in anime, that there’s a crisis amongst the otaku, all that. I have a geeky audience, here: let’s see what you think.

I guess it depends what you mean by “modern”. I was able to get friends over to watch, jeez, a whole mix of stuff, like Tenchi (the original OVA series), Gundam 08th MS team, Evangelion, etc. but pre-’90s stuff like Project A-Ko or Urusei Yatsura tended to put people to sleep. Bubblegum Crisis was OK, I think.
The context in which I’m hearing this is specifically about post-2000 vs. older. I think they’re high, but I also like the majority of what you’re talking about (and of course everything I put in the poll XD ).
I wish the poll plug-in didn’t rearrange answers by popularity, it makes some of them not make any sense anymore. ;_;
@solarbird
I wonder if this perception is a result of the veritable flood of anime that’s been released since the late ’90s. People may not realize that they were only seeing the better stuff before.
Gigantor FTW!
@Chrysolithos: lol Gigantor XD
I also should’ve had Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. I can’t believe I left that out!
@smar: This seems reasonable. I was looking at some of my old VHS fansubs from the Dawn of Time and being reaaaaaaaly happy that I can get better replacements for pretty much everything now. (There’s one short I need to transfer off myself, because I’ve never found it again. It’s French, not Japanese, tho’.)
Where’s Fullmetal Alchemist?
🙂
@Catbunny Option 1! (FMA is Fullmetal Alchemist. o/ )
