oh look, it’s a top-of-post eta: All of Bandcamp’s profits today are going to the ACLU, so that’s awesome. Go cruise around, check other bands not just us, see if there’s anything you like, buy it. Doesn’t have to be our work, just go do the thing, eh?
Anyway, so, yeah. It’s been more than a little bad-crazy and it shows no signs of stopping. Hell, just staying my current degree of sane these days involves a lot of Overwatch, so let’s talk about that.
I’m a Tracer main. I play a good bit of Pharah and D.va and I’m not a half-bad Ana or Zenyatta, but the outright majority of my playtime is Tracer.
One of the things I drive for is damage efficiency. And by that, I mean no “trash damage” – damage done that does not lead to a character elimination. So if I gold medal in damage, and don’t gold in kills and/or objective kills? I’m not playing well, even if we win.
It’s not like with Junkrat, who has so much splatter weaponry, right? Splash damage is part of his game. There’s enough of it that even “trash damage” has impact, just by tying up enemy support. My area of effect, by contrast, is tiny, and therefore, it needs to be effective.
There are four primary offensive stats in Overwatch games: total kills, objective kills, time spent on the objective itself, and total damage. If I get golds in all four, that’s good! But if I gold/gold/gold/silver or gold/gold/gold/bronze (total kills, objective kills, time on objective, total damage)? That’s great. It means I’m not wasting my shots. It says my damage output is disproportionately effective, and says better things, to my mind, then four golds. (And I kind of wish Overwatch acknowledged that.)
So last night, I got gold/gold/gold/NO MEDAL in a victory, which means like no junk damage. Led team in total kills, objective kills, and time spent on objective, despite being no higher than fourth of six in total damage done.
That is some goddamn efficiency.
I don’t think I’ve managed gold/gold/gold/NONE before, and I’m really happy about it.
I’ve got a song I’m writing, “Manic Pixie Murder Machine.” It’s very much not together yet but I think I see where it’s going, and of course, it’s about Tracer. And that is the kind of Tracer I want to be in-game.
Surely some of you have to play Overwatch. Who do you main?
i’m not your goddamn limey waifu honey
i’m a manic pixie murder machiiiiiiiiiiiine

I got sucked in at some point, but I don’t really main anybody. Mostly, I play D.va for mobile tank (wandering distraction is GO; and if I have backup in a useful way, I’m actually useful! Gasp.), Soldier 76/Pharah for turning out the ouch and Mercy/Ana for heals (depending – trackball makes Ana bad as sole healer), or Symmetra, whom I am finally getting useful with… at least on def. I still don’t grok her on attack… Mei is just fun. Oh, you were going to go through there? NOPE. Heh. Here, let me help you slow down, apprecia- oops. Overdid it. Sorry ’bout that….
Mei is so goddamn cute I can’t even be mad when someone on the other team nails me with that one.
Mei is the most adorable INCARNATION OF SATAN ever.
Particularly like last night when you’re in quickplay and she decides it’d be funny to icewall off your own teammate’s nerf.
Mostly I’m just saying it’s a good thing friendly fire can’t hurt your other team members. XD
I can move a payload with D.va, and if I have a Mercy or Ana behind me I’m pretty goddamn hard to stop. I know she’s a flanker tank, but you can treat that payload as a Reinhart shield that never goes away and get pretty damn far with that.
(Yeah, you can’t move it, but D.va can move herself pretty fast and stay on the point so that works out.)
I love Pharah whereever I’ve got environmental kill opportunities, like in the Garden in China – those bridges are the best damn things ever. I just wish my repulsion worked on turreted Bastions, ’cause it takes like three rockets from above to take them down solo, and I’d love to see one just in turret mode flying off the edge.
(Oh man, I had play a couple of days ago – I’d just run out of rocket, and was down on our bridge, having just environmental killed a couple of the other team and rocketed out another, and their Piggy decided he is tired of my shit and flies over, right? And he is just on my ass and I hit the concussion grenade and he goes flying – but he hooks me and starts dragging me over the side with him. And I’m on reload, right? But I get a rocket, as we’re going off the side, and rocket him and break the chain, and get my lift rockets back just before going too far down. I love environmental play. 😀 )
Yah, pretty much most of that. People howling about D.va’s nerf make me wonder though; once I got used to it.. she doesn’t really seem any less effective; I just can’t pull a Rein and hold something without cover anymore. She’s an adorable pain in the butt.
Right there with you on Bastion; I swear, he’s not hard to remove if you treat him like Torb’s turrets; he can only concentrate fire on one thing at a time. Flank him while he’s doing that, and he’s toast. But I get toasted a lot trying to do that while everyone else flails. I don’t do comp.; for all the good teams I have played with, I’ve gotten chewed a few times.
The number of times lift rockets or D.va’s booster have saved me from an ignominious fall into the nothing… I still giggle, thinking about the number of times I’ve been Rein-rushed off the side and boosted myself out of danger while he plummeted to his doom. ^^;
