Do I know anyone with working (or semi-working – appearing to work is fine) versions of:
- 8-track cassette player
- wire recorder (as in, records sound onto metal wires) (oh I would love this)
- “cart” player (a.k.a. 2-track, used mostly in radio stations, or 4-track, the home version – either will do)
- Vintage 78-RPM phonograph
- Edison cylinder player (please please please)
- Reel-to-reel player (any audio type)
- Other old hopefully-obscure audio technologies
If this is you, and you can shoot video reasonably stably (horizontal phone video will do), and are interested in a mildly silly project this week, contact me via the contact page.

Skeery part-I have had *all* of those things-plus some (a four track recorder, and a rim-drive recorder)-at one point in time. I *might* still have some recording wire (it’s really fine stainless steel wire-like 28 gauge or thereabouts), and I think I still have a working 1960s portable reel to reel recorder (think the original Mission Impossible). I had a edison cylinder machine (missing the horn, and whatever it used for a drive belt) which was very likely stolen by some relatives for drinking money (I made the mistake of mentioning it was an antique in front of them..and it “evaporated’ shortly thereafter). Do you remember the toy recorder from the ’60s that used a minute or two loop tape? It was just something a child could use to hear their own voice.
I still have a functioning dual deck recorder from the early 1990s…
Rim-drive recorders! I forgot about those.
Wire recorders were just the weirdest things in so many ways. I’d love to see one in working condition. 😀
