{"id":8875,"date":"2016-03-16T08:30:06","date_gmt":"2016-03-16T15:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/crimeandtheforcesofevil.com\/blog\/?p=8875"},"modified":"2016-03-16T20:49:35","modified_gmt":"2016-03-17T03:49:35","slug":"rip-sylvia-anderson-1927-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crimeandtheforcesofevil.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/16\/rip-sylvia-anderson-1927-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"rip sylvia anderson (1927-2016)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>okay, <em>now<\/em> 2016 can suck it. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/entertainment-arts-35818530\">Sylvia Anderson is dead<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the States, everybody knows <i>Doctor Who<\/i> and <i>Blake&#8217;s 7<\/i>, but the Gerry and Sylvia Anderson collaborations spanned decades as well, new series after new series, some of the most amazing, crazy, quirky, modernist epic madness you&#8217;ve ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>And the thing is &#8211; because sexism, everybody thinks of Gerry as the only mad genius, but I got news, <Em>he wasn&#8217;t<\/em>. Sylvia was slugging right in with him. She had a career <EM>after<\/eM> they broke up. And the important part, the part people don&#8217;t know unless they dig into all this, is&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Sylvia was the one who made their worlds <Em>work<\/em>. She was the one who <Em>sold you<\/em> on their modernist futures, who put the pieces together so they <Em>breathed<\/em>, and even when it was the supermarionation (puppet) shows &#8211; no, <Em>especially<\/eM> when it was the puppet shows &#8211; it was <em>her aesthetic<\/eM> that made them <Em>live<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><i>Thunderbirds<\/i> without Sylvia, without Lady Penelope? Impossible. <i>Captain Starlet<\/i> without the Angels? Ha!<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sylvia Anderson was a vast creative force on the puppet shows, the creator of every grace note, every beloved quirk. Compare series one of <i>Space: 1999<\/i> with series two. That&#8217;s when they separated, between those two years. They were already fighting pretty badly in year one, so it&#8217;s not always their best work, but I will goddamn well stack up &#8220;Voyager&#8217;s Return&#8221; or &#8220;Dragon&#8217;s Domain&#8221; or &#8220;Mission of the Darians&#8221; against <Em>anything<\/eM> that came out of <i>Star Trek<\/i> and look <Em>pretty goddamn good, thanks<\/eM>.<\/p>\n<p>And then look at the train wreck that is Series 2 and know, <EM>that&#8217;s without Sylvia<\/em>. Don&#8217;t discount her. Ever.<\/p>\n<p>And now she&#8217;s gone. Not, I suppose, &#8220;before her time,&#8221; even though she was <em>still working as a voice actress last year<\/em>. She was turning 89 later this month; that&#8217;s where you really start to lose even the more durable of people.<\/p>\n<p>But I don&#8217;t have to like it.<\/p>\n<p>So long, Lady P. Thank you. It&#8217;s been marvellous. Well done.
