{"id":8227,"date":"2015-10-28T09:10:57","date_gmt":"2015-10-28T16:10:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/crimeandtheforcesofevil.com\/blog\/?p=8227"},"modified":"2016-09-22T18:30:26","modified_gmt":"2016-09-23T01:30:26","slug":"how-sxsw-really-really-blew-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crimeandtheforcesofevil.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/28\/how-sxsw-really-really-blew-it\/","title":{"rendered":"How SXSW really, really blew it."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wow, SXSW <em>really<\/em> screwed up.<\/p>\n<p>First, by scheduling a pro-GamerGate panel filled with people who have led harassment campaigns as a &#8220;balanced discussion&#8221; &#8220;counterpoint&#8221; to another scheduled panel, on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tauriqmoosa\/status\/658772706872152064\">web design that&#8217;s built around limiting harassment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Because you <em>always<\/eM> want to provide time to harassers to counterpoint building web interfaces that encourage civil discussion and discourage harassment.<\/p>\n<p>Even better: SXSW bypassed the normal process for the GamerGate panel. Panels have to go through vetting and public comment, and be submitted by a deadline. None of that was true here. It was apparently thrown in secretly.<\/p>\n<p>Then, when said GamerGate panel&#8217;s members started throwing GamerGaters at the web design panel, and the inevitable harassment and threats went out, SXSW cancelled web design panel <em>because that panel&#8217;s members were being harassed<\/eM>. SXSW claimed they couldn&#8217;t have a &#8220;civil discussion,&#8221; because the panelists were being targeted. No, really, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/randileeharper\/status\/658769841327837184\">here&#8217;s SXSW&#8217;s idiotic statement on the matter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Blaming the victim much? Blaming the victims <em>they set up as targets?<\/em> This gets into outright mendaciousness. There is a point of incompetence at which it stops being simple incompetence and <em>becomes<\/eM> malice. Congratulations, SXSW, <em>you hit that point<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>SXSW then also cancelled the GamerGate panel, but wow, that does not make it better. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2015\/10\/27\/this-is-not-a-game-how-sxsw-turned-gamergate-abuse-into-a-spectator-sport.html\"><i>The Daily Beast<\/i> has <em>strong words<\/em> about this<\/a>.
