{"id":3030,"date":"2012-10-14T17:09:59","date_gmt":"2012-10-15T00:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/crimeandtheforcesofevil.com\/blog\/?p=3030"},"modified":"2012-10-14T17:09:59","modified_gmt":"2012-10-15T00:09:59","slug":"on-the-space-jump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crimeandtheforcesofevil.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/14\/on-the-space-jump\/","title":{"rendered":"on the space jump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having just watched the space jump &#8211; the skydive from near-orbit, the edge of space &#8211; I have to say one thing on an old topic.<\/p>\n<p>People talk a lot about things from science fiction coming true, most particularly <i>Star Trek<\/i>. <i>Star Trek<\/i> kind of holds the record on that, arguably, and you can quibble about whether that&#8217;s prediction or cause (since it inspired so many scientists and engineers) but no matter how you count it, all that&#8217;s fair and good.<\/p>\n<p>But this? This space jump from near orbit?<\/p>\n<p>This one isn&#8217;t for <i>Star Trek<\/i>. It&#8217;s for that show&#8217;s predecessor, <i>Lost in Space<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody remembers this, but for one year &#8211; the black-and-white year, which generally isn&#8217;t in reruns &#8211; <i>Lost in Space<\/i> was hard SF. Not always very successfully &#8211; arguably, not <i>often<\/i> very successfully &#8211; but very much intentionally. They were trying.<\/p>\n<p>And in the very first story arc, in <i>Lost in Space<\/i>, protagonist Dr. John Robinson <i>made this jump<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Wherever you might be, Irwin Allen: at long last, that&#8217;s one for you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Having just watched the space jump &#8211; the skydive from near-orbit, the edge of space &#8211; I have to say one thing on an old topic.
